Bolsena, 22 km from Orvieto
The town, anciently called Novi Velzna (the new Velzna), is located on the shores of the lake of the same name, which is of volcanic origin, and has always been closely linked to Orvieto.
Its main attractions are the Church of Santa Cristina, the Monaldeschi Castle, the islands of Martana and Bisentina (which can be visited by boat), the beautiful swimmable shores of the lake, and the many restaurants serving typical local dishes, first and foremost the whitefish (coregone), which is widely found in this lake.
Bolsena is the site of the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena (1263).
